The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has recommended allowing satellite internet operators, including Starlink, OneWeb, and Amazon’s Project Kuiper, to provide services in Pakistan. The move aims to improve internet access in remote regions, highways, and areas where traditional telecom infrastructure remains difficult to expand.
PTA Chairman Major General (R) Hafeez Ur Rehman highlighted the importance of satellite broadband while briefing the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat. He stated that satellite-based internet services have become increasingly important for delivering reliable connectivity to underserved communities across the country.
According to the PTA chairman, expanding conventional telecom networks in remote and challenging locations can be expensive and time-consuming. Satellite internet technology offers an alternative solution by providing high-speed connectivity without requiring extensive ground-based infrastructure.
The proposed licensing of satellite internet operators could open the door for global technology companies to enter Pakistan’s growing digital market. Companies such as Starlink, operated by SpaceX, and Amazon’s Project Kuiper are developing satellite networks designed to provide broadband coverage in areas with limited access to traditional internet services.
Satellite internet could play a significant role in connecting rural communities, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, businesses, and government services. Improved access could support digital inclusion and help reduce the connectivity gap between urban and remote areas.
The technology may also benefit travelers and transportation networks, particularly along Pakistan’s motorways and highways where maintaining stable internet coverage through traditional methods can be challenging. Reliable connectivity in these areas could improve communication, navigation services, and emergency response capabilities.
Pakistan has been focusing on digital transformation and expanding internet access as more economic activities move online. Faster and wider connectivity is considered essential for promoting e-commerce, online education, remote work, and technology-based businesses.
However, introducing international satellite internet providers would require regulatory approvals, spectrum management, security considerations, and compliance with Pakistan’s telecommunications policies. Authorities are expected to evaluate technical and operational requirements before issuing licenses.
The potential arrival of major satellite internet companies could increase competition in Pakistan’s broadband market and provide consumers with more connectivity options. It may also encourage existing telecom operators to improve services and invest further in network expansion.
Industry experts believe satellite broadband could become an important part of Pakistan’s future internet ecosystem, particularly for areas where fiber networks and mobile infrastructure are difficult to deploy.
As the country continues efforts to strengthen its digital infrastructure, the PTA’s recommendation represents a significant step toward exploring advanced connectivity solutions and expanding internet access for millions of people across Pakistan.
