The federal government of Pakistan has formally approved policy directives allowing telecom operators to begin 5G trials in Gilgit-Baltistan, signaling a major milestone in the country’s digital transformation efforts, particularly in remote and mountainous regions.
According to official details, the directives were prepared by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority on behalf of the Gilgit-Baltistan Council and approved under Article 60(2)(a), read with Entry No. 1 of the Third Schedule of the Gilgit-Baltistan Order 2018. The move clears the way for telecom companies to conduct technical trials of next-generation mobile connectivity in the region.
The approval is being viewed as an important step toward bridging the digital divide between urban centers and remote northern areas. Gilgit-Baltistan, known for its mountainous terrain and scattered population, has historically faced connectivity challenges due to difficult geography and infrastructure limitations.
With the introduction of 5G trial operations, authorities aim to test high-speed internet performance, network stability, and coverage feasibility in extreme geographic conditions. The results of these trials are expected to help shape future nationwide 5G rollout strategies.
Officials believe that improved connectivity could significantly benefit multiple sectors in the region, including education, tourism, healthcare, and trade. Faster internet speeds and lower latency could also support digital services, remote learning, and telemedicine in areas where physical access to facilities is limited.
Telecom experts note that successful 5G trials in Gilgit-Baltistan could provide valuable insights into deploying advanced networks in challenging environments, potentially serving as a model for other remote regions across Pakistan.
The development also aligns with broader government efforts to accelerate digital infrastructure expansion and enhance nationwide connectivity. As demand for high-speed internet continues to grow, especially in rural and underserved areas, 5G trials are seen as a critical step toward long-term technological advancement.
Once implemented successfully, the initiative could help improve communication networks, support economic development, and strengthen digital inclusion across the northern regions of Pakistan.
