Windows 11 users concerned about device tracking now have access to a new open-source tool designed to remove Microsoft’s Global Device Identifier (GDID) from Windows systems.

The tool, called deGDID, was released by Windscribe and is designed to remove the identifier and prevent Windows from issuing it again.

Unlike an IP address, which can change when a user switches networks or connects through a VPN, GDID operates at a lower level. This means changing an IP address or using a VPN does not necessarily address the identifier itself.

The release has attracted attention because of concerns surrounding persistent device identifiers and how they may be used to connect activity to a particular system.

According to information accompanying the tool, deGDID is intended to address the presence of GDID on Windows devices. Its open-source nature also allows technically knowledgeable users to inspect how the tool works.
