WhatsApp’s Upcoming Document Scanner Could Replace CamScanner on Android

WhatsApp is expanding its feature set again—this time by adding a native document scanning tool for Android devices. Details about the new feature emerged in beta version 2.25.18.29, available via the Google Play Beta Program.
This long-awaited tool was first made available to iOS users and is now heading to Android. The built-in scanner allows users to capture and share high-quality document scans directly from within the app, removing the need for third-party tools such as CamScanner or Adobe Scan.

Once live, the feature will be accessible via the file-sharing menu inside any WhatsApp chat. Tapping the new “Scan Document” option will activate the camera with two capture modes:
- Manual Mode – Gives users full control over when to capture the image, ideal for framing complex layouts.
- Automatic Mode – Uses smart detection to identify document edges and captures the image automatically, speeding up the process.
Following capture, the scanned document is instantly converted into a PDF, ready to be shared within WhatsApp. This conversion and processing happen locally on the user’s phone using Android’s native tools. As with all WhatsApp features, documents shared through the platform will benefit from end-to-end encryption, keeping sensitive files secure.
The feature is currently unavailable to the public but has been confirmed to be under active development. A broader rollout is expected soon.
This innovation will be especially useful for users who regularly send official papers, receipts, or assignments. It also helps consolidate multiple tasks—scanning, converting, and sharing—into one seamless flow within WhatsApp, reducing app fatigue and saving time.
