OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has announced its backing of Critterz, a feature-length animated film created largely with artificial intelligence tools. The project is designed to showcase how AI can revolutionize filmmaking by reducing production costs and speeding up timelines. Producers aim to premiere the movie at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2026 before a global release.
A New Chapter in Animation
Critterz follows woodland creatures on an adventure after their village is disrupted by a mysterious outsider. The project is budgeted under $30 million, with a production timeline of only nine months — significantly less than the three years and $100–200 million typically required for major animated features.
The film began as a short project by Chad Nelson, a creative specialist at OpenAI. Using the company’s DALL-E tool, Nelson developed the concept three years ago before expanding it into a full-length production with London-based Vertigo Films and Los Angeles studio Native Foreign.
Blending AI and Human Creativity
The production of Critterz merges AI innovation with human artistry. Artists provide initial sketches, which are then enhanced by OpenAI’s models such as GPT-5 and image-generation tools. Meanwhile, professional actors will voice the characters, ensuring emotional depth and relatability.
The script has been written by experienced writers, including those behind Paddington in Peru, ensuring a balance of AI-driven visuals with high-quality storytelling.
Legal and Industry Challenges
The project arrives during heated debates in Hollywood over the role of AI in entertainment. Several major studios, including Disney and Warner Bros., have filed lawsuits against AI companies like Midjourney, alleging copyright infringement in model training.
Despite the controversy, OpenAI and its partners emphasize that Critterz is intended as proof that AI can complement, rather than replace, human creativity. The film is financed by Federation Studios, with around 30 contributors expected to share profits under a new compensation model.
Setting a Precedent for AI Cinema
Critterz is not the first attempt at AI-generated animation. Previous efforts like DreadClub: Vampire’s Verdict and Where the Robots Grow received mixed reactions, with critics questioning whether AI can evoke the emotional resonance of traditional films.
However, supporters of Critterz argue that this project, with its hybrid production model and Cannes debut, could mark a turning point in the global film industry.
