WhatsApp is working on a new guest calling feature that could allow people to join WhatsApp calls even if they do not have a WhatsApp account.
The feature is designed to make it easier for people outside the WhatsApp ecosystem to participate in calls without going through the usual process of downloading the application or registering an account.
Under the planned system, WhatsApp users would be able to share a secure web link with people they want to invite to a call.
Recipients would not need to install WhatsApp on their devices. Instead, they could open the invitation link through a web browser and join the conversation using WhatsApp Web.
The development could make WhatsApp calling more convenient for situations where some participants do not regularly use the messaging platform.
For example, a WhatsApp user could potentially invite a colleague, friend or family member to a call without asking them to create an account first. This could reduce one of the barriers that currently prevents non-users from joining WhatsApp-based conversations.
The guest calling feature is still being developed, however, and it has not yet reached the beta-testing stage.
WhatsApp has also not announced an official release date for the feature. This means the functionality could still change before it becomes available to the public.
The planned web-based approach would also allow guests to participate through a browser rather than requiring the WhatsApp mobile application.
