Google has announced a major upgrade to its Quick Share technology, aiming to make file sharing between Android and iPhone devices more convenient. The upcoming feature will allow users to transfer photos, videos, and other files directly from supported applications without opening a separate sharing menu.
The announcement was made at Android Dev Summit 2026, where Google introduced a new Quick Share software development kit (SDK). The company plans to release the SDK during the first half of 2027, giving developers an opportunity to integrate the file-sharing feature into their Android and iOS applications.
The update represents another step towards improving connectivity between different mobile operating systems, particularly for users who regularly exchange files between Android smartphones and Apple devices.
Quick Share Will Work Directly Inside Applications
Currently, Android users generally need to open their phone’s sharing menu and select Quick Share when sending files to nearby devices. Although the existing feature provides a convenient way to transfer content, users must leave the application’s main interface to complete the process.
Google’s upcoming SDK is designed to simplify this experience by allowing developers to integrate Quick Share directly into their applications.
With the new system, users will be able to select photos, videos, or other supported files and initiate transfers without navigating through the traditional full-screen sharing interface.
Instead of opening a separate Quick Share window, a smaller panel will appear at the bottom of the application. This panel will display previews of the selected files and provide options to begin the transfer.
The redesigned experience is intended to make file sharing faster and more straightforward while reducing the number of steps required to send content between nearby devices.
Google Plans to Bring Quick Share Integration to iPhone Apps
One of the most important aspects of the announcement is Google’s plan to provide an iOS SDK alongside its Android development tools.
This will allow developers to integrate Quick Share functionality into applications running on Apple’s iPhone operating system. As a result, supported iOS apps will also be able to offer the new file-sharing experience.
The development could improve communication between Android and iPhone users, who have traditionally relied on different file-sharing systems and third-party applications to exchange content.
By making the technology available to developers across both platforms, Google is aiming to create a more consistent file-sharing experience.
However, the feature will not automatically become available in every Android or iPhone application. Developers will need to choose to integrate the SDK into their software before users can access the functionality.
Release Expected in the First Half of 2027
Google has confirmed that the new Quick Share SDK is planned for release in the first half of 2027. This will give application developers the opportunity to incorporate the technology into their products.
The actual availability of the feature across different applications will depend on how quickly developers adopt the SDK and release updated versions of their software.
For users, the upgrade could eventually make everyday activities such as sharing holiday photographs, transferring videos, and exchanging documents between Android and iPhone devices considerably easier.
The announcement also highlights Google’s broader efforts to improve compatibility between mobile platforms and reduce friction when users interact with different devices.
With the planned SDK release in 2027, Quick Share could become a more widely integrated file-transfer option across mobile applications, although its adoption will depend on developer participation.
