Pak Telecom Mobile Limited (PTML), operating under the brand Ufone along with its digital telecom platform Onic, has successfully secured 5G spectrum in the latest auction conducted by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority in Islamabad. The development marks an important step toward advancing Pakistan’s next generation of digital connectivity and technological innovation.
The acquisition positions PTML to play a key role in supporting Pakistan’s digital transformation by enabling faster mobile connectivity, ultra-low latency services, and advanced digital capabilities. With 5G technology expected to transform industries and consumer experiences, the spectrum purchase represents a major milestone for the telecom sector.
According to the company, the newly acquired spectrum will also be utilized by Telenor Pakistan once its planned merger with PTML is finalized. After the completion of the merger, subject to regulatory approvals, the combined entity will operate under a unified structure often referred to as MergeCo.
The merged network will allow the integrated telecom platform to serve more than 70 million customers across Pakistan. By combining resources, infrastructure, and spectrum assets, the new entity aims to deliver stronger nationwide coverage and enhanced digital services for both individuals and businesses.
The introduction of 5G technology represents a significant leap beyond traditional mobile networks. For consumers, it promises ultra-high-definition video streaming, smoother cloud gaming experiences, and faster access to digital entertainment and online services. Emerging technologies such as augmented reality and virtual reality are also expected to benefit from improved network performance.
Businesses and enterprises are likely to experience major advantages as well. 5G connectivity can support smart manufacturing, connected supply chains, AI-driven analytics, and highly reliable cloud-based operations. These capabilities can help companies improve efficiency, reduce operational costs, and develop innovative digital solutions.
In addition, sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and public services stand to benefit from the advanced capabilities of 5G networks. The technology can enable remote medical diagnostics, virtual classrooms, smart farming tools, intelligent traffic systems, and modern financial services powered by high-speed connectivity.
Following the spectrum acquisition, PTML plans to begin preparations for a phased rollout of 5G services across Pakistan. The deployment strategy will initially focus on major urban centers before expanding to other regions of the country.
The rollout will involve substantial investments in network modernization, infrastructure development, and the expansion of telecom sites to ensure reliable coverage and improved customer experience.
Hatem Bamatraf, President and Group CEO of Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited, emphasized that 5G is not only about faster speeds but also about enabling entirely new digital opportunities for individuals, businesses, and industries.
The expansion of 5G connectivity is expected to support the government’s broader digital initiatives, including the vision of building a stronger digital economy in Pakistan. With continued investments in advanced technologies and infrastructure, telecom operators aim to expand digital access and accelerate innovation across the country.
