The federal government has finalized the initial draft of a mobile phone leasing policy designed to provide citizens with 5G smartphones on easy monthly installments. Zarrar Hasham Khan shared the update during a briefing on preparations for the upcoming 5G spectrum auction, emphasizing the government’s goal of increasing accessibility to next-generation mobile technology.
The policy aims to make 5G-enabled devices more attainable for the general public by offering flexible payment options. This initiative comes as Pakistan prepares for the nationwide rollout of 5G networks, which is expected to enhance internet speeds, connectivity, and digital services across the country.
In a related statement, Major General (R) Hafeez Ur Rehman noted that entry-level 5G smartphones are expected to remain affordable, with prices ranging between Rs. 40,000 and Rs. 45,000. The pricing strategy is intended to encourage wider adoption of 5G technology and ensure that a larger portion of the population can benefit from faster mobile networks.
Officials highlighted that the installment program and competitive pricing will support consumers who may not be able to pay the full cost of a 5G device upfront. By lowering the financial barrier, the government hopes to accelerate digital inclusion and ensure that citizens across different income segments can access modern mobile technology.
The mobile phone leasing initiative is part of broader efforts by the Ministry of IT and Telecom and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to promote digital infrastructure and connectivity. Experts believe that affordable 5G devices, coupled with network expansion, could boost e-commerce, online education, remote work, and other digital services throughout Pakistan.
The policy draft is expected to be finalized in coordination with telecom operators before the 5G spectrum auction.
