PTA Warns of Unauthorized Mobile Services Draining User Balances

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has issued a public warning after receiving a surge in complaints about unauthorized activation of Value Added Services (VAS). The regulator revealed that many mobile users have experienced unexpected deductions from their prepaid and postpaid accounts due to services they never knowingly subscribed to.

In its advisory, PTA urged consumers across Pakistan to remain vigilant and regularly monitor their mobile balances. The authority emphasized the importance of checking active subscriptions to prevent unwanted charges and financial loss.

According to PTA, Value Added Services cover a wide range of subscription-based features. These include caller tunes or ring back tones, daily SMS or internet bundles, missed call notifications, mobile gaming services, horoscope updates, quiz platforms, infotainment alerts, and other premium content offerings. While these services can enhance the user experience, they often come with recurring charges.

The regulator clarified that no VAS can be activated without the explicit consent of the customer. Telecom operators are required to follow a clear and transparent consent process before enabling any paid service. If a service is activated without approval, users have the right to file a complaint and seek immediate deactivation.

Unauthorized subscriptions can occur due to accidental clicks on promotional links, misleading pop-up advertisements, or unclear consent mechanisms. In some cases, users may unknowingly agree to a subscription while browsing online content or installing certain applications.

PTA has advised mobile subscribers to review their service details through their network’s official helpline or mobile application. Consumers are also encouraged to carefully read on-screen prompts before confirming any service activation. Ignoring verification messages or quickly tapping consent buttons can lead to automatic enrollment in paid services.

The authority reiterated its commitment to consumer protection and digital transparency. It stated that telecom companies must strictly adhere to regulatory guidelines and ensure that customers are fully informed about service charges and renewal terms.

With mobile usage increasing rapidly across Pakistan, awareness about subscription-based services has become more critical than ever. Regular balance checks and subscription reviews can help users avoid unnecessary deductions and maintain control over their accounts.

PTA continues to monitor complaints and has assured the public that appropriate action will be taken against operators found violating regulations. Mobile users are encouraged to report suspicious deductions immediately to safeguard their finances and digital rights.
