Apple is taking a giant leap in hardware innovation by launching its first-ever in-house 5G modem, Sinope, with the 2025 iPhone SE. After years of development, this strategic move is a step toward reducing dependence on external chipmakers like Qualcomm.
What Makes the Sinope Modem Unique?
The Sinope modem will initially support sub-6 5G, lacking mmWave capabilities seen in Qualcomm’s modems. While its four-carrier aggregation lags behind Qualcomm’s six-carrier standard, Apple gains an edge in power efficiency and cost savings. Early lab tests indicate speeds of up to 4Gbps, highlighting its potential for mainstream applications.
Notably, the modem is paired with an Apple-designed RF front-end system named Carpo, ensuring seamless integration and improved network connectivity for users. Manufactured by TSMC, Sinope promises tighter hardware integration across Apple’s devices.

Apple plans to refine its modem over several iterations. By 2026, the second-gen modem will feature mmWave support and six-carrier aggregation for sub-6 bands. By 2027, the third-gen modem will introduce AI capabilities and next-gen satellite connectivity, aiming to surpass Qualcomm’s benchmarks.
