Instagram Ad Lures Mumbai Woman into Rs 6.37 Lacs Fraud

Social Media’s Dark Side
Instagram, known for its engaging reels and captivating ads, became a nightmare for a Mumbai woman from Gorai. A deceptive part-time job ad cost her Rs 6.37 lacs, serving as a grim reminder of the dangers lurking online.

The Fraudulent Opportunity
The woman encountered an Instagram ad on November 30 promoting a part-time job where users could earn money by liking videos. Clicking the link led her to a Telegram group, where scammers provided a seemingly legitimate explanation of the process.

Small Gains, Big Losses
To win her trust, the scammers transferred small payments to her account initially. Feeling reassured by these transactions, she invested larger sums over three transactions, expecting substantial returns as promised. However, her profits never materialized.

The Moment of Realization
When she contacted the scammers about her missing earnings, they demanded more money, claiming it was a “tax” to release her funds. It was then that the woman realized she had been scammed. She promptly lodged a complaint with the Borivali Police, but her financial loss had already occurred.

Tips to Avoid Falling Victim

  1. Verify Job Offers: Scrutinize the authenticity of any online job postings, especially those from social media platforms.
  2. Question Unrealistic Promises: Offers promising effortless earnings should raise red flags.
  3. Safeguard Personal Data: Avoid sharing personal details or transferring money without proper verification.
  4. Report Suspicious Ads: Flag dubious ads and accounts to social media platforms.
  5. Stay Alert: Educate yourself about evolving online scams to protect yourself and others.
